Before her retirement, Matsuda-sensei introduced me (Michael) to Professor William Lowe from Howard Community College (hereafter HCC) in Maryland, USA. Professors Lowe and Matsuda organized a COIL in 2022 that had gone extremely well and he was eager to continue the exchange.

昨年度のCOILが非常にうまくいったので、Lowe教授は交流を続けることを熱望し、松田先生から紹介を受けて今年は別の教員クラスがCOILの関係を続けることになりました。Lowe教授はアジア文学を教えており、この記事を書いている私Michael HerkeはAcademic Readingのクラスで日本の短編小説の英訳版を教材としています。そこで、今年は吉本バナナの『小さな闇』をCOILプロジェクトのテキストに選びました。
Using the same task sheet, HCC and Setsunan students worked through the text using the guiding questions therein. They then posted their answers to Padlet, an online writing platform, where they could read and respond to each other’s ideas. Finally, students met online in real time to continue the discussion on Zoom. One surprise was that two HCC students, Kevin and Jasmine, had been studying Japanese and could carry on basic conversation.
HCCと摂南の学生は、同じタスクシートを使用し、手がかりになる質問に答えながら作品に取り組みました。そして、回答をオンラインプラットフォームであるPadletに投稿し、お互いの考えを読んでコメントを送り合いました。最後に、オンライン会議システム上で顔を合わせ、リアルタイムで議論を続けました。なんとHCCの2人の学生、KevinとJasmineは日本語を勉強していて、基本的な会話を日本語でできました。
It was a challenge for Setsunan students to carry out literary analysis in English online as well as manage a new learning platform, but they rose to the occasion. HCC students appreciated the chance to discuss Japanese literature with Japanese and get their perspective on the story. It helped make the literature come alive.
摂南の学生にとって、英語で文学分析を行い、新しい学習プラットフォームを使いこなすことは簡単ではありませんでしたが、果敢に挑戦していました。HCCの学生は、日本文学について日本の人と話し合い、物語について視点を得る体験を意義ある機会ととらえてくれました。その経験は、この文学作品を、生きた言葉に変えました。
Professor Lowe visited the Setsunan campus in June and met with a class from the Ei-Pro course who will participate in a different COIL project in the fall. Professor Lowe explained the project and took their questions. They are really looking forward to it.
Lowe教授は6月に摂南大学の寝屋川キャンパスを訪問し、秋に別のCOILプロジェクトに参加する英語プロフェッショナルコースの3年生クラスとお会いになりました。教授はプロジェクトについて説明し、質問に答えてくださいました。学生たちは秋のプロジェクトを本当に楽しみにしています。
