2022年度後期から2023年度前期にかけて海外での長期留学で学んだ学生による報告会を12月14日（木）に開催しました。
今回の報告会は，国際学部西川学部長の挨拶で始まり，カルガリー大学（カナダ）とサイモンフレーザー大学（カナダ）および台湾師範大学（台湾）で半年間または1年間学んで帰国した学生が現地での学習や体験をグループでプレゼンテーションしました。それぞれの報告のあと，出席した学生や教員との活発な質疑が交わされ，特に2024年度前期に留学する予定の学生からは熱心な質問やコメントがありました。
留学生たちが参加したのは英語や中国語を学ぶための語学プログラムです。留学先では，多国籍のクラスメイトが共に学び，そして学外でも一緒に過ごすことでコミュニケーション力と友情を深めました。そして学内のスポーツ活動やコミュニティーに参加することで現地の学生と交流し，多くの友だちができました。それぞれの大学での学び方，教室外での過ごし方，住む街の特徴は多様です。留学先別に帰国報告をご紹介しましょう。
カルガリー大学のメンバーは，1学期に1冊の小説を読むという課題に挑戦しました。難しい課題でしたが，読み終えた時の達成感は素晴らしいものでした。カナダは多民族国家です。ある学生のホストファミリーはモンゴル出身だったのでモンゴル料理を楽しめることもありました。休日に訪れたトロントやバンクーバー，バンフやウォータートンの山や湖，そしてオーロラ観光などカナダの自然も満喫しました。
カナダ西海岸バンクーバーのサイモンフレーザー大学に留学した学生はカナダ研究コースを履修したので，語学に磨きをかけるとともに野外やミュージアムでの学習も多く，カナダ文化への理解も深めることができました。海に近い地域なので，授業以外の時間にはビーチバレーやナイトマーケットを楽しんだこと，バンクーバー対岸のビクトリアを観光した経験などを紹介しました。
台湾師範大学には台湾最大の語学センターがあり，自分の語学力にぴったりのクラスを選べるのが魅力です。台湾の祝日やクリスマスなどイベントごとに食べ物のプレゼントがあります。学校は台北市の中心部にあるので放課後の過ごし方も退屈しません。市内の夜市を食べ歩きするのも楽しいです。人気の観光地九份も日帰りで訪れることができます。西海岸の古都台南や東海岸の台東まで足を伸ばしたメンバーもいます。
長期留学での住居はアパート，寮，ホームステイ，シェアハウスなどさまざまで，それぞれに特徴があります。留学先選びでは，キャンパスライフだけでなく自分に合った居住形態を実現できる留学先を選ぶこと，またそのための情報集めが大切です。
次に，カナダ留学から帰国した学生からの帰国報告をより詳しく紹介します。
Students at Setsunan University Return from Study Abroad in Canada
Recently, Setsunan University students majoring in returning from of overseas study in Canada at the University of Calgary and Simon Fraser University gave a presentation on their study abroad.
Of course, a major portion of their time in Canada was spent taking English courses. However, in Canada, they were able experience interesting and different approaches to language study. At the University of Calgary, students enjoyed the challenge of reading one English novel per semester. The novels they read were more challenging that the reading passages that they had studied in Japan. While it was difficult, the students expressed that they felt a strong sense of accomplishment on completing the novels. At Simon Fraser University, a Canadian Studies course is available. The student who took this course said that it was interesting that there were many field trips to museums as a part of the course. This gave her the opportunity to increase her appreciation of Canadian culture while studying English.
As many of those attending the presentation were Setsunan University students planning to study abroad in the future, the presenters gave advice on how to make their stays in Canada more productive and pleasant. One tip is to make an effort to make friends from other countries. To do this, it is important to take the initiative. Actively approach others and create opportunities to spend time with them. One student gave advice to join intramural sports. Intramural sports are sports that are organized at universities for recreational purposes. They provide the opportunity to get exercise and socialize. According to the student who gave the advice, not many Japanese students join intramural sports, so it is easier to meet students from Canada and other countries. So, why not try out intramural sports if you study abroad in the future?
Another student advised learning the rules of host families and adapting to them. By following the rules, it is possible to maintain a good relationship with the members of a host family. What are some of the rules you might encounter? One rule that was mentioned is that shower times may be limited. Another is there may be a limit on the number of times a week that you can use the washing machine. A final example is that you may be required to send a text to your host family before you arrive home. Each home stay family has their own rules. So, be sure to talk with your host family about their rules when you first arrive and be sure to follow them.
With this advice, you will be sure to have a positive study abroad experience, so why not try studying abroad as a Setsunan University student?
